Recruitment procedure in 2012/2013



Doctoral Programme in Management and Economics is organised by the Collegium of World Economy of the Warsaw School of Economics and is regulated by a set of specific regulations officially approved by the Senate of the Warsaw School of Economics.

Doctoral Programme in Management and Economics (4 years – 8 semesters), Collegium of the World Economy, Warsaw School of Economics – recruitment procedure

The Collegium of World Economy is authorised to grant Ph.D. degree in economics, management and finance.
Lectures and seminars will take place on Saturdays and Sundays.

Recruitment rules

The recruitment takes place in Warsaw, at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH).
The recruitment process consists of five stages:

I. The first and main round:

  1. Collection of applications (from 19th March 2012 to 20th May 2012);
  2. Preliminary selection (22nd May 2012);
  3. Written examination (1st June 2012);
  4. Interview with the Recruitment Committee (1st June 2012);
  5. Final decision on admissions (no later than the 10th June 2012).

II. The second round (only in case of free places):

  1. Collection of applications (from 15th June 2012 to 1st September 2012);
  2. Preliminary selection (6th September 2012);
  3. Written examination (22nd September 2012);
  4. Interview with the Recruitment Committee (22nd September 2012);
  5. Final decision on admissions (no later than the 25th September 2012).

Ad. 1) Collection of applications

Candidates are required to send the following documents by e-mail to the address This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it as scans in pdf or jpg format:

  1. Filled-in application form with handwritten signature (here),
  2. CV
  3. Certificate or other formal documents proving English language skills in accordance with the list to be downloaded,
  4. A copy of Master’s diploma in Polish or English,
  5. A tentative research proposal of the future doctoral dissertation.

The tentative research proposal should be no longer that 6 000 characters, excluding spaces. The candidate is not expected to present a complete research proposal of a doctoral dissertation, but rather a general outline of what will be the focus and method of candidate’s research. It is suggested that the following points should be covered:

  • introduction specifying the research problem the candidate wants to address,
  • the background of the problem in literature – what gaps in scientific knowledge the candidate intends to fill in with his or her research project,
  • major components of the research problem – the most important research questions,
  • reasons for selecting the problem – theoretical and practical importance of the problem,
  • research method for solving the research problem.

! Signed paper documents should be delivered at the economics examination by the candidates who have successfully passed the preliminary phase of the recruitment.

Ad. 2) Preliminary selection of candidates

The preliminary selection of candidates will be made by the Recruitment Committee on the basis of received documents and will take into account the following criteria:

  1. Candidates must prove they posses Master’s degree.
  2. Preliminary research proposal must show that the Candidate understands the process of scientific research.

Candidates who meet all requirements will be invited to a written examination and further an interview. Details as to the time and place of the examination and interview will be sent by e-mail to all candidates who passed the first stage of the recruitment process no later than the 22nd May 2012 (1st round) and no later than the 6th September 2012 (2nd round).

Ad. 3) Written examination

Written examination in economics followed by interviews will be held on 1st June 2012 (1st round) and 22nd September 2012 (2nd round).

The examination will include a series of single choice questions in English aimed at testing the candidates' knowledge of economics theory.
The exam questions will be based on the following textbook: David Begg, Stanley Fischer, Rudiger Dornbusch, “Economics”, McGraw Hill Higher Education, London 2005.

Ad. 4) Interview with the Recruitment Committee

Interview with the Recruitment Committee will be held on 1st June 2012 (1st round) and 22nd September 2012 (2nd round).

The interview will take about 10-15 minutes and will be conducted in English.

Candidates will be asked questions related to their planned research proposal and previous academic and professional experience. The interview is aimed at assessing candidate's academic maturity, research skills and ability to communicate effectively in English.

Ad. 5) Final decision on admissions

After evaluating all candidates, a ranking list will be compiled and candidates with best scores will be offered admission to the Doctoral Programme in Management and Economics. The final results of the recruitment process will be announced after all candidates allowed to the final stage have been interviewed.

During the recruitment procedure candidates will be assigned the grand total of 100 points, which will reflect their performance in the three main areas:

  • academic quality of tentative research proposal: up to 50 pts based on analysis of provided document and interview performance,
  • ability to communicate in English: up to 20 pts based on analysis of the research proposal and interview performance,
  • results of exam in economics: up to 30 pts.

Information on the recruitment results will be sent by e-mail no later than the 10th June 2012 (1st round) and no later than the 25th September 2012 (2nd round).

Tuition:

Fees for the Doctoral Programme in Management and Economics amount to:

  • EU citizens: PLN 22,000 (PLN 8,000 – 1st year; PLN 7,200  – 2nd year; PLN 4,800 – 3rd year; PLN 2,000 - 4th year);
  • Non-EU citizens – EUR 17,600 (EUR 4,400 per one year)*

Tuition for each year can be paid in the form of a single payment or in two installments (x1 in every semester).

! The condition to be admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Management and Economics is to have paid tuition fee for the first semester no later than 7 days from the date of receiving the decision about qualification for the doctoral programme.

*Upon reasonable request Rector of the Warsaw School of Economics may reduce fees for non-EU citizens.
